And, on January 28, 2012 Tennessee recorded their 1,500th win against the Auburn Tigers. It was somewhat sloppy but Auburn managed to shoot a low percentage from the floor and cleaned it up at the end closing the gap to 15, with a final score of 64-49.
Head Coach Cuonzo Martin said, “We won the game because we rebounded and defended.” And I find that the statement rings true.
Jeronne Maymon led the team in scoring with 15, and boards with 19 almost matching his HOSS performance in Maui as far as rebounding is concerned. Trae Golden had 13 points, and Skylar McBee had 12. Jarnell Stokes, who was 5-of-9 on field goals, and Jordan McRae both had 11. Golden led the team in minutes with 35, Maymon had 34, and McBee was close behind with 30. The Vols had 15 offensive rebounds, and 53 total rebounds, holding Auburn to 30.4% field goal shooting.
This is a good momentum builder heading into Tuesday night’s clash with the #1 Kentucky Wildcats in Rupp Arena.
Factoid of the Day: The Vols rebounding total, 53, was the season high.
